Real-World Activities/Tasks

This page showcases resources that focus on connecting mathematics to the real world. Most of these resources could be easily scaled to be a full-blown PBL experience, but also can serve as a single daily lesson in which students engage with mathematics through the real world.

Skew the Script is a free curricular resource for teachers looking to incorporate more real-world and relevant contexts into their mathematics classes. It was designed by an AP Statistics teacher for his own classroom and now offers both a full AP Statistics curriculum but also a curriculum for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. These lessons include a set of student materials (video for a flipped classroom, a pdf of the task, a Desmos student activity, and a set of reflection questions) and a set of teacher materials (handout key and other supplemental items as needed).

Math Medic offers free daily lessons for every high school course that are connected to real-world experiences. As they call it, the lessons are “experience first and formalize later” and they explain how that works within each lesson. They also offer a blog with ideas about pedagogy and specific tips for the different AP courses that they support. I have a couple colleagues, amazing mathematics educators who implement thinking classrooms and problem-based tactics, and they use Math Medic for all of their classes.
