Blogs and Podcasts

On this page, you’ll find a collection of blogs and podcasts I regularly follow to explore best practices for the classroom. While not all explicitly focus on project-based learning, many align with its principles in meaningful ways. You’ll also find a link to the Authenticimatics blog, where I share my own reflections and vision for teaching mathematics through PBL—often inspired by conversations and questions from fellow educators.

The Cult of Pedagogy podcast and blog with Jennifer Gonzalez is a fount of research-based educational tips and conversations with fabulous educators with amazing ideas. Some of my favorites that I reference regularly are her conversation with Colin Seale about his book Thinking Like a Lawyer for educators (he’s a mathematics educator, too!), her conversation about games from theater improv traditions that can be used for classroom learning, and anything she has done on standards-based grading. She is positive and fun to listen to and anything you hear on the podcast is easy to find in the blog posts for later reference.

NC2ML (North Carolina Collaborative for Mathematics Learning) is a network of educators—including researchers, teachers, administrators, and district leaders—focused on defining and supporting high-quality math instruction. One key initiative is a campaign on mathematics discourse, featuring a podcast (which I co-host) with conversations between researchers and practitioners. The site also offers classroom tasks, resources for building a discourse-supportive culture, and slide decks for professional learning on discourse moves.

Edutopia is a rich blog full of practical, research-based strategies for educators. Their project-based learning section offers a wide range of ideas and project examples—including many that apply to math. By using the search function (shown in the last image above), you can dig into math-specific projects across a variety of topics. It may take a little time to sort through, but several teachers I’ve worked with consider it their go-to spot for discovering their next great project.

Magnify Learning is a project-based learning resource recommended to me by multiple PBL math teachers who participated in my dissertation study. While I have not had the opportunity to use it myself, it appears to have blog articles and podcasts with great ideas for implementing PBL in schools and classrooms. I look forward to exploring it more in the upcoming year!
